More than $42,000 in scholarships is available this fall from the WCU Family Scholarship Fund. The university’s board of trustees voted in 2006 to create the endowed fund with proceeds from the sale of Prudential Life Insurance stock. As a Prudential customer, the university received the stock when Prudential reorganized from a mutual insurance company to a stock company.
“These scholarships will help WCU employees and their family members afford to earn a college education at a first-class institution without having to leave our community and the mountains they call home,” said Chuck Wooten, vice chancellor for administration and finance.
WCU Family Scholarships will be awarded in amounts up to $1,000 per semester – $2,000 per year – to qualified degree-seeking WCU students who are university employees, or their spouses or children. Financial need is not a requirement but may be considered by the selection committee in awarding the funds. The scholarships for WCU employees who are seeking degrees at Western will cover the remaining tuition and fees after the University of North Carolina system’s employee tuition waiver is applied.
Applications are available online under the “Forms” section of the faculty and staff Web site and will be accepted through Friday, July 18, in the human resources office at 220 H.F. Robinson Building. For more information, contact Mike Stewart, assistant to the chief financial officer, at (828) 227-7321 or stewart@email.wcu.edu.
